Frequently Asked Questions

How is my landed cost actually calculated?

We take your goods value (converted to INR at the day's exchange rate) and add freight — per CBM for sea, or per chargeable kilo for air — to arrive at a CIF value. Customs broker commission, Basic Customs Duty and Social Welfare Surcharge are calculated on that value, IGST is applied on top, and finally local cartage to your doorstep is added — the same chain of calculations the tool below runs live.

What exchange rate do you use for FOB conversion?

The calculator uses the RMB to INR rate you enter, so you can test today's rate or a forecasted one. For an actual shipment, we quote using the exchange rate applicable on the date of your Bill of Entry.

Does the customs duty rate change by product?

Yes — Basic Customs Duty and any anti-dumping or safeguard duty depend on your product's HS code. The 25% default in the calculator is illustrative; tell us your HS code and we'll confirm the exact applicable rate.

What is Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS)?

SWS is a central government surcharge levied at 10% of the Basic Customs Duty payable on most imports into India, in addition to the duty itself.

Is IGST charged on top of customs duty?

Yes. IGST (currently 18% for most general cargo) is charged on the sum of the CIF value, broker commission, Basic Customs Duty and Social Welfare Surcharge — not on the goods value alone — which is why it comes near the end of the calculation.

Why is my air freight cost higher than sea freight per kg?

Airlines bill the greater of your shipment's actual weight and its volumetric weight (1 CBM = 166.67 kg), and the per-kg air rate itself is priced for speed — typically a few days transit versus a few weeks by sea. The calculator applies this chargeable-weight rule automatically when you switch to Air Freight.

Can Apextar handle customs clearance and duty payment for me?

Yes — our in-house customs brokerage files your Bill of Entry, calculates the exact duty payable and coordinates payment, so the numbers on your final invoice match what was actually assessed by customs.

Will my actual invoice match this calculator exactly?

It will be close, but the calculator is a planning tool. Real invoices can vary slightly for exchange-rate movement on the assessment date, applicable exemption notifications, and any examination or demurrage charges specific to your shipment.
